Recycling the Non-Recyclable

In her latest Sustainable Southwater article, Nancy Brock gives us an insight into the range of different recycling oppurtunities.

Here in West Sussex we’re very fortunate in that WSCC take a wide variety of materials in our kerbside bins for recycling. At present, however, there are a number of things they can’t yet take that can be recycled. This can be frustrating for those of us who are keen recyclers.

TerraCycle is an innovative recycling company that is eliminating the idea of waste by recycling the “non-recyclable”. Whether it’s coffee capsules, ballpoint pens, crisp packets or baby food pouches, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. They partner with individual collectors as well as major consumer product companies, manufacturers and small businesses and with your help, are able to divert millions of kilos of waste from landfills and incinerators every month. Money can be raised for charity or good causes through them, too.

Checkout their website if you fancy setting up a collection scheme and earning a few bob into the bargain for your chosen good cause.

If you’d rather just hand over your “recyclable non-recyclables” then you can drop many items off at the Friends Meeting House on Worthing Road, opposite Sainsbury’s. See the list below;

  • Cat and Dog food - plastic pouches and flexible bags

  • Baby food pouches

  • Ballpoint pens, felt tips, biros, correction fluids, markers and highlighters

  • Flexible plastic from sweet biscuit, cake and cracker wrappers

  • Crisp packets

  • Plastic milk bottle tops

  • Certain Inkjet cartridges

  • Toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes

  • Personal care and beauty products

  • Home cleaning products

  • Dishwasher packaging

  • Plastic ring carriers from cans

It’s worth noting that if you go along to the Friends Meeting House with your recycling on the first Saturday of each month, you can also get your Ecover and Faith in Nature product bottles refilled, along with a range of other refillables. Pop in to see what they offer and maybe stay for a cuppa!
